To be clear, KMM stops responding.  The machine is fine.  I'll report back with
the top information.

KMM is on a host with almost no load and plenty of resources.  As far as I
know, mysql is not freezing.  I don't have any problems with mythtv.  

What kind of errors should I look for in MySQL?

I'm an amateur.  How do I generate a backtrace when KMM stops responding?
