I've been following this topic in the mailing list, and couldn't figure out
what the problem was.  I just checked my own version (4.5.3, with KDE 4.6.2
under Gentoo) and I always see the category in the regular ledger view (not
ledger lens, which I don't use) whether or not Payee and/or Memo have values
also.

In Configure KMyMoney, on the Ledger section, I have "Show all register entries
in full detail"checked.  Do you have this set?
