That's quite a common GUI allowing for multiple choices.  If you've ever added
icons to a tool-bar, you may have seen something similar.

The small right-hand frame contains the fields on which the ledger will be
sorted.  At the top is the first field on which to sort, in this case on date. 
Then, after that sort, the next choice is acted upon, here reconciled items,
etc.  If it contains an unwanted option, select it then delete it.  If you wish
to change the sort order, click the item you want to move, then click the
up/down arrows to move it.

The pane on the left contains other fields on which you may sort.  If you wish
to employ those, select the click the right arrow to move it to the other pane,
then adjust its position, as above.

Have you checked the manual under 'Help' in the to menu?
