In case anyone was about to look at this, don't bother just yet.

Whilst I now have this working, the code has become somewhat unwieldy, with the
multiple near-identical columnXxxSelect() routines all growing larger and more 
complex.  I'm now looking to, hopefully, simplify things, and make it more 
maintainable.
