I would not disable the status bar during startup. It is already doing its work
(showing progress and informations), while the central part of the window is
unable to to its work because it's loading (and then it should be shown as
disabled).
Just open a file in openOffice and you'll notice the (active) progress bar in
the bottom while the file is loaded.
