Shouldn't that be "make" "make test" and then "make install"?  If it  
fails testing, I would think you would not want to install.

However, that brings up the problem that running the program before  
doing "make install" doesn't actually use all of the new parts - it  
still gets some from the main installed KDE.  Is this something that  
should be brought up with the larger KDE development team, or is it  
already a known issue to them?
