If I understand it correctly, kmdi1 connects the signals, when you *switch* 
the mode, but on startup it does not *switch* but just connect immediately. 
So both doesn't happen somehow (just took a short glance, and the code 
looks confusing).

In kmdi2 connect was called two times, a bug that slipped in at akademy I 
guess, but I was never aware of it, until jowenn pointed this out on IRC.
