subclassing won't help you, as qsplitters thoughts of layout are that widgets 
are not over each other, to change that, you need much more changes than you 
can get by subclassing, at least in qt 3, not that sure about qt4, there at 
least the public api of splitter is much better, but not sure if it is open 
enough internal to allow a subclass to modify the behaviour in a that drastic 
way.
