Yeah, I forgot something: having the painterly features in overlay layers 
brings our design much closer to 
http://research.edm.luc.ac.be/~tvanlaerhoven/publications/vanlaerhoven_vanreeth_casa2005.pdf, 
but also to the way Bill Baxter models his stuff.

The older research (Cockshott & Levien) model the painterly features in-band, 
as another channel, new research does what I outline above and add them as 
separate layers.
