Steps in strokes

When working on a paint paintop Wet & Sticky I realized that we don't
currently have a way to tell the paintop how many times the paintop has been
exececuted in the current stroke. We'll need something that starts counting
on tool-down, informs the paintop where we are in the stroke and lets the
paintop inform the tool back about the current state.
This would enable not only interesting things like loading a brush with a
finite amount of "paint", but also transfering paint from the canvas back
onto the brush, and even painting with gradients as in the Gimp.
What would be best: counting steps, or using the distance traveled in pixels?
And how shall we combine this with the curve smoothing in KisPainter?
