So I committed my current work to svn, but I haven't yet enabled the swapping 
itself. For those interested, you can enable it by changing the
#if 0 // enable this to enable swapping
line in core/tiles/kis_tilemanager.cc It isn't entirely ok yet, but it's quite 
usable already, I think.

It does, however, print useful information about krita's memory consumption 
(even with the swapping disabled). It is a nice indication about how much 
memory krita uses for the tiles, without the need of valgrind-tools to log it 
all :-)
