Contiguous fill: Sample merged option

Hi,

I've tried to find out what the effect of the Sample merged option is 
(switchable in the Control box when the Contiguous fill tool is selected), but
to no avail.
The code in kis_fill_painter.cc (line 249 and on) is not really helpful...
Can anyone clarify this?
