We were chatting on IRC about this book yesterday, and today I looked it up:

Thesis, MIT, June 1986.

I believe there is a decent discussion in Gooch & Gooch on non-photorealistic 
rendering. It would be great if someone with access to a decent university 
library can wangle a copy,
