selection not eraseable (any more)

A few weeks ago one could select an image area and then press Ctrl-x to
remove it (with the background chequer pattern coming through then).
This doesn't work any more now. This was so much fun to play with!  ;-(

Note: I'm too stupid to fix it. Should I better file a regular bug report
for something like this?

PS: the compilation with ImageMagick/CVS works now  :-)
