Java2D and JAI

I'm currently reading the JAI -- Java Advanced Imaging -- documentation
from http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jai/index.jsp, and I think that
this is a very interesting design. It is bit-depth, color model independent,
can handle parallel processing of image tiles and lots more. (vips can do
parallel processing, too, but doesn't seem as generic, vips is very much
designed for its special application).
