Thanks -- one live and learns. I've for now given up on trying to create a 
transparent temporary layer and compositing with that, because QPixmap 
doesn't support that anyway, and I'have to get the drawing routines from
somewhere else. Probably from the old tools themselves, that used to work on
a blob of bytes as far as I can see.
