Do you have a set of coding guidelines that mention things like "don't 
ever use dynamic_cast"? I think that's a pretty good rule to follow in 
general (although I agree in Darin that it almost certainly will make 
no real performance difference here). It would be good to know if you 
guys have other rules like this, so we won't break them accidentally, 
and if we do need to break them on purpose, we can let you know.
