selected an image when you clicked on it and then started dragging. 

I think the common case is that you want to drag the image, and not to select 
it. selecting is mostly an editing thing or when you want to copy the text to 
clipboard etc. and images don't export to the clipboard anyway. at least not 
in konqueror (does any other browser do that?). and if you want to select the 
image to do something with it I think most people simply expect that the 
context menu you get when RMB'ing it contains the usual items (view, save as, 
send etc). 

This is btw how other browsers behave as well, and you can still select an 
image by clicking left of it and start dragging right (or the other way 
around).
