Hi Guys,
I've been reading the Kget mailing list archives & would like to share a
project that I have been working on. It is called Metalink. (I also help out
w/ the OpenOffice.org P2P/Mirrors distribution project which you'll see is
kinda related).
I'm excited to see that Kget has recently added support for multithreaded
downloads!
My project, Metalink makes it easy for users to use multithreaded downloads
from multiple locations in a single click. Its pretty cool, & I think you
guys would be interested. Basically, a users clicks one link & all the
mirror (& p2p) locations are there in the download manager so it can grab
segments from each location. There's also stuff like built in checksums
(MD5/SHA-1), which I think are kinda nice. This seems to me like it could be
beneficial to a lot of projects. For instance, at OpenOffice.org we
encourage people to check MD5 sums, but even the people who know how to
rarely do, much less average users. So something built in & automatic is
much better.
We have a working version on Firefox with GetRight on Windows (support
should be included in GetRight 6 which is in beta right now). If you have
access to Windows & would like to check it out let me know. But the concept
is simple enough without seeing it in action. If you would like to see the
source code (only about 3 pages) you'll see just how simple it is. I'm not a
programmer, or I would offer to implement it myself but if you wanted to add
it I don't think it would take more than a few hours.
Please let me know if you'd like to hear more, & thank you for your time.
Anthony Bryan
