Did you notice the button itself changes and tells you which side will be
closed ?
Is it legible to you ?

I feel a setting as you suggest would make sense, we'd have in settings,
something like:

Clicking on close Split view:
                  ( ) Close the focus one
                  ( ) Close the unfocused one
                  ( ) Close the right one
