The folder is still supposed to be marked with an underline, which would make
it clear which folder one is exiting from. Does that not happen for you?

If this is about the underline not being as visible as a selection, that is
something we want to improve on in the future. That part is being discussed in
https://invent.kde.org/system/dolphin/-/issues/53.
