One additional nuance that I just noticed that may only be tangential to the
issue I reported -- previews for video files do end up regenerating without
reloading the view if I happen to mouse over the icon. 

It looks like that may be related to the fact that videos show different frames
in the preview. Images don't have the same behavior on hover, at least
non-animated images.
