Summary: Recent Files/Locations sorting should always be
separate from the system
Classification: Applications
Product: dolphin
Version: 23.08.2
Platform: Archlinux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: general

Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
Right now in Dolphin's and in the open file/save file dialogs the Recent Files
and Recent Locations views follow the system's type of view(icon mode, list
mode, detailed mode) and the sorting type(by name or by date or others). This
means if i prefer to have sorting by name in all my locations and then want to
quickly open a file i recently accessed via Dolphin, if i switch to the Recent
Files sidebar tab the items there will be sorted by name as well, which i
assume 99% cases people do not want. It also causes confusion because files and
folders which i haven't accessed presumably for months are at the top because
their name starts with a 0 or an 'A' and the file i actually need is somewhere
in the middle, slowing down productivity by a lot as now i need to find it
somewhere. In my experience this discourages me from using the recents menu,
wondering if it even works reliably at all.
I know it's possible to make Dolphin remember view mode and sorting option for
every folder on your system but this option is too extreme in my opinion,
making me alter my workflow just for this one use case.
So i was wondering if it would be possible to have the Recent Files and
Locations views always have sorting set to Accessed(or maybe Modified) along
with Newest first by default and independent of the system's settings. Or
alternatively have an option somewhere in the menus so the user may choose for
themselves. Dolphin's behavior should be: when the user visits these views -
switch to this sorting option and when the user leaves this view revert back to
the system's preferences.
All these points also stand for the open/save dialog. In my opinion it makes no
sense to go get a recent file, then have to switch to the appropriate sorting
option, then work on the file and then later be confused why the rest of your
folders in the home view are sorted by recent too and having to remember to
switch it back. I also believe this is how Gnome does it: the recents menu at
the top is always reliable and you don't have to think about any of this.
I am sorry if i chose the wrong category for the bug type, this needs to be
fixed in both Dolphin and Kio in my opinion to have a good UX.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Visit home folder and have Dolphin's sorting set to by Name
2. Go to Recent Files in the left sidebar
OBSERVED RESULT
Sorting remains by Name
EXPECTED RESULT
Sorting is set to last Accessed and the files are sorted correctly without an
extra refresh
