In dolphin 22.04.2, utilising the blank column on the left hand side of the
window fixes all my issues.

- Deselecting files
- Clicking in the blank column to select a pane in split view
- Right-click to paste a file into the directory being viewed
- Right-click a directory in the list and select paste file to paste a file
into that directory
- Drag and drop a file into the directory being viewed
- Drag and drop a file over a directory in the list to paste the file into that
directory
