  I don't see a way to add the area as a proper panel that won't be problematic. Do you have a clear picture in mind how that could work?
  
  I think it is important that this contextual area can be enabled by default. This would especially help users that don't know when to use the right mouse button. I like my solution a lot in that regard. Maybe there is a way to improve on it and reduce the shortcomings you are seeing?
