  Because it's easier to have names for things, so you can call them something. So when we send an email saying let's talk about the feature freeze date or schedule or other stuff people know if we're talking for "this" release or "next" or "next next".
  
  I wouldn't say we don't want it used, it's useful, it's just "KDE Applications" is not **one** thing, it's lots of things together. It has a name and a version number because it makes talking about it easier, again you can't have a full list on the announcement with 215 names and version numbers, it's just not feasible.
