Concerning how people use the panels and what they expect from them, I
must admit that my knowledge is rather limited. I use the Places Panel
to quickly jump to some of the locations that I use most frequently,
and I assume that this is the case for many other users as well.

We do have a list of feature requests. For the Places Panel, it is here:

But there might be some more requests that are not assigned to the
right component. For example, I think I remember reading the wish to
provide a tree-like group structure in the "Places" more than once.
