I think your solution (url_suffixes.desktop) is fine.
This is just like the search providers in kdebase/kcontrol/ebrowsing/plugins/ikws/searchproviders, etc.
Translators will automatically see the entry (Name=...) to translate, whereas they wouldn't know that
they have to edit the entry.desktop file for this additional field.
