developing plugins - newbie help needed

Seems libtool installs the .so from the project's .libs folder.

I stumbled upon multiple KDE lib folders:
 /usr/kde/3.5/lib/
 /usr/kde/3.5/lib/kde3/
 /usr/lib/kde3/

I've now tried installing to all three of them, restarted KDE, no go.
Not a new menu item in sight, and my printf:

KPassivePopup::message("Test - Oi, we got activated!", NULL);

doesn't popup either.
