there are also other use cases such as natural sort for dates, but this would
be a step in the right direction.
for lists smaller than a few hundred files the speed difference won't be
noticeable. it might make sense to enable it by default for such directories
(which will be most of them) and not for HUUUGE directories like /dev.
user-facing configuration for that might be a bit icky though...
it would still be nice to at least have natural sorting as an option.
