I didn't want to clutter the GUI with even more options, if one is 
enough (see below).

No. I think many people used them, because they had no other choice. 
And I also think they do not mind if they are turned into hover 
close buttons, which are much better.
If really do not see ANY reason to use permanent close buttons 
rather than hover cbs. If you or someone else can't live without 
them (again, I see no reason), tell me and I will make that option 
possible, too.
