You're right and my previous mail was wrong. According to the HTML 4 specs 
(http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/text.html#whitespace) the patch in BR 
53035 seems to be correct and we shouldn't remove any other whitespace from 
the document (because it probably is there intentionally).
