I'm in the exact same situation. It's often a shame to see people not using 
the integrated search functionality simply because it's not obvious it's 
there and then I always have to show them how it works, etc..

Correct. The search bar is next to the location bar which won't really miss 
the space :)

I just added the search bar to CVS, there was support for it already on 
#kde-devel and as it an optional konqy plugin it won't be much in the way for 
people. You can find it under kdeaddons/konq-plugins/searchbar.
