PATCH: Applying icon effects to active items in the list/treeview..[#14247]

Hi...

The attached patch tries to implement the subj (which is also a TODO item in 
the code); it seems to work fine, is vg-clean, and even doesn't crash [any 
longer] when I remove the active items.. However, this needs somewhat through 
review since I am not that familiar with the code, and hence am not sure I 
didn't miss any codepath where the item may be removed.
