Could be a reason. Sometimes my machine halts when logging out or switching
to another virtual terminal. This seems to be related to the NVIDIA kernel module.
But this wouldn't explain the trimmed lines.
It looks as if the lines have been written from corrupted memory
into the config file, beeing processed a bit.
Another hint:
there seem to be only lines from the html in kmailrc which contain the '=' character. Example lines:

<span class="fineblue"> Size 20x20</span>
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<table cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 border=0 width=800>
<table width="222" height="179" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" background="images/checker.gif">
<td align="right" class="blue">MM-Status: released</td>
<td bgcolor="#CCCCCC"><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="19" height="1"></td>

So, all lines follow the 'key=value' pattern.
