Oh. It's not fixed on the 3.0 branch, which is where I was working.

Either HEAD is rarely compilable, or I have bad luck. It usually takes me a 
week to get a checkout from HEAD that compiles. 

I will abandon my change then. I assume if you want to fix the branch, you can 
backport your changes.

P.S. How does one tell if someone else is working on a bug already?
