How does KDevelop know where my build directory is?

This is maybe a little OT, but...

I use a set of stock scripts to e.g. set up and run my builds (as well
as driving builds through KDevelop), such that I usually have an
existing build before I import a project. I keep source and build
separate at a high level, e.g. /path/to/src/group/project and
/path/to/build/group/project

I noticed recently that, instead of its old behavior of wanting to
create a subdirectory 'build' in my source directory, KDevelop is
somehow suddenly able to find my correct build directory. And it's
driving me nuts wondering just how the heck it does that?

Can someone enlighten me?
