Simple question

I have been looking for a Linux IDE and ended up with kdevelop. I am new to Linux and X and would like to have a practice environment. I always want to know what's under the hood, so I plan to start to make a simple X-program. No features or other libraries. How to create the appropriate files to be able to "make" the program, I mean like how to include the X-libraries.
