Stripping file overhead from project

Hi,

is it possible to remove all unnecessary files from a source tree when 
distributing a project. There is so much buzz automatically generated by 
automake and friends. A distclean will not remove this. A simple project ends 
up in about 500K tar.bz. What a waste of resources! Any way to cleanup 
automatically?
