Flash memory works by applying a high voltage across a thin dielectric
to charge/discharge
a 'floating' gate. The dielectric is slowly damaged by this, and flash
memory has a lifetime
of 10000 - 100000 writes. So in practise it lasts as long as your
average hard disk when used
for occasional storage.
