problem with configure

I checked my configure, and it looks roughly the same at this point in the 
script.

There are two things I can suggest:

1.  It looks like you can override the check with the environment variable 
$ac_ct_CC.  Try setting that to gcc and see what happens

2. Look for sparc-linux-gcc.  It's picking it up from somewhere; perhaps you 
have a file named that somewhere on your system that you aren't familiar 
with?
