Debugging with 2.1.5 on KDE 3.1.1

I have built a terminal C++ program with KDevelop 2.1.5 and KDE 3.1.1.  
The program runs.  I made some changes and am trying to debug them with 
the Debug menu.  I use Start (others)/Debug with parameters.

Everything seems to work up to accepting input from the keyboard.  The 
stdout window shows the correct output up to where the program is wating 
for a command but nothing I type no matter what active window I choose 
seems to do anything.

Ok.  KDbg from the Tools menu seems to accept input.

The documentation seems to say that the Debug commands will invoke KDbg 
but thiis didn't seem to happen.  At least I can now use KDbg for this 
program.
