I use SuSE on one of our embedded systems, and I'm very happy with it as well.  
The only problems I've ever run into on package distributions is when you 
attempt to compile your own programs instead of using RPMs, which looks like 
what caused this problem in the first place.  Unfortunately, the needed 
ability to compile your own programs is pretty essential for most of us.
