I think it's untreated cow skin, it's a Clint Eastwood cowboy series
(from the 60's and 70's) with a great theme song ("Rawhiiiiiide!"), and
it's RedHat's absolutely bleeding edge beta distribution :)

Uhmmm.. huh? :) RedHat SRPMS should compile for most recent RedHat
distros (no matter if they're from Rawhide). There's the usual
dependancy stuff, but that just means you need to compile several
packages out of Rawhide.

Thing is, Rawhide is focused on providing the _very_ latest versions of
all software, which means they don't care too much wether stuff actually
works the way it should. I guess this is what the OP means by "employ
usual cautions". I've never had trouble with rawhide packages in the
past though, and if stuff is broken things are fixed pretty quick.
