Is ./configure really portable?

Hi,

I have a nasty problem with the makefiles generated from
kdevelop's automake and autoconf files, under SGI's Irix.
Here is what I do:

% gmake -f Makefile.dist
[blabla]
% ./configure
[blablabla]
% gmake
cd . && /bin/sh ./config.status Makefile
config.status: error: invalid argument: Makefile
gmake: *** [Makefile] Error 1

Are these files supposed to be portable?
