I don't know directly why the name "Gideon" was chosen - it's not a very 
common name in the US, but the Gideons are an international organization that 
promotes the spread of Christianity throughout the world.  Most people in the 
US would know them as the group that puts bibles in all of the hotel rooms.  
Gideon was a Hebrew judge of early days.

An old definition of Gideon is "one that breaks or bruises; a destroyer".
