debugging panel applets

Hello all!

Would some kind soul out there please lend me a hand and explain to me how I
can debug a panel applet that I'm developing for KDE?

The general premise of the project is to have a quickspell applet that would
be a tiny wrapper around kspell. I've got the whole thing finished except
for the fact that the applet crashes when (it seems) you instantiate the
KSpell class and try to use it. The same code seems to work fine in an
application.

What I would really like to do is to figure out how to set a breakpoint and
step through my code to find out exactly where the crash is occurring. For
the life of me, I can't figure out how to do this. If someone could grab the
code and write a little tutorial for me :) I would be very thankful.

btw: if anyone has any ideas as to why the thing is crashing, I would love
