Well, *I* have been spending some time on this, and I couldn't really have done much more complicated during those hours.

David, do you think we've arrived at a point where we could consider moving this code to a more central location where it can serve other apps too?

If you followed the exchange with David you must have seen that it's a number that follows from Qt's sizeHint() code (the actual number is 8, I add a 1-pixel margin above and below, which explains why I only subtract 6). 

I'm not sure how to fix this, other than by going back to determining `maximumHeight` from `fontMetrics().height()` . David, thoughts?
