Overall good stuff, I guess - haven't tested it. If you really want all this in 4.7, we can ask for an exception. But I'd say parts of this patch are new features, and 4.7 is feature-frozen. I'd rather we put these into master instead... That would also "solve" the i18n issue.

Also, could some stuff be unit tested from the things you add/fix? That would give better confidence for the future.

    This and below will require an exception from the i18n crew. The 4.7 branch is marked as "stable", and thus string-frozen for translations.
    
    If you want to get it into 4.7, I'll ask the k18n crew. Shouldn't be an issue to get it in, I guess.
