This is also seen on linux sometimes, see e.g. 
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=314031

Any chance you can figure out whether its really related to file descriptors? 
Or debug it some more by adding debug output to ItemRepository::open and 
figure out where it fails exactly.

Sorry, but I can't really help here without more information or a reliable way 
to reproduce it :(
